If a free throw is awarded, the diagram below shows the positions for the offence and defence teams when the free throw is taken.
The offensive and defensive positions cannot be changed. But you do not have to fill all of these positions if you as a team do not want to. All other players must be outside of the 3-point line.
A free throw has to either ‘go in’ or ‘hit the ring’ to be a valid free throw. Otherwise a turn-over occurs and the defensive team takes possession of the ball with a side line throw, taken in line with the free throw line.
